Crockpot Chicken

I did it.

I finally made a whole chicken.

{I've put this off for too long... and when I found a super deal on a good quality chicken... I had to try it}

My main motivation was so that I could make chicken broth -- but, it's so nice to have lots of chicken in our freezer too!

Crockpot Chicken - SnoWhite

1 good-quality chicken
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
poultry seasoning, as desired

Place the chicken into the crockpot (mine just barley fit!)

Add the seasonings and minced garlic cloves.

Cover, and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for ~5 hours; or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 180 degrees and meat is tender.

Pull off and enjoy what you want for dinner... and save the rest for BROTH!

This was so easy -- I think all my work with Giant this fall helped... but, I do think I'll be watching for good whole chicken sales in the future!

  1. Looks delicious!! I have never fixed a whole chicken. A friend of mine was telling me how good it is, and could not believe I've never tried it. Thanks for sharing!!

  2. Looks yummy, I fixed one last week. I did mine a little different. Crumple of foil in the bottom of your crockpot, add whole FROZEN bird, added similar seasonings, cooked on high for about 8-9 hours, very tender. Nice to be able to add it frozen. The foil allows the bird to not sit in the drippings...wonderful.

  3. Yum! This looks delicious. My mind is already churning with ideas for the leftover pulled chicken! :)

BTW, your Lemon Herby Chicken turned out FABULOUS! We'll definitely be having it again. So tender and full of flavor!

  4. Oh yay!! I love anything I can make in my crockpot. Although I pretty much never make a whole chicken. We are pretty much white meat eaters. But this is easy enough it is probably worth a try. :)

  5. This is the only way I make a whole chicken.
I just can't deal with it any other way. It grosses me out I guess.
It's so good. I passed it on to some friends and they have loved it.
Glad you tried it. It's a budget saver. I use my shredded chicken in soups since it shreds so easy right out of the crockpot.
    Great post!

  6. Are you serious? That's all you have to do? Are you freakin kidding me?! Geez why haven't I done this before?

  8. I, too, have found good deals on better quality whole chickens... it must be the movement for better food.
Since this could be an anti-procrastination post, my friend, Amy, has a link party at

that you could link to if you wanted. Thanks as always for sharing!

  9. Thank you for stating that you're saving the rest for broth. So many people don't do that! But one chicken can make up to 6-7 quarts of broth (depending on the chicken). And, if you have a pressure canner, you are able to can it up (I love doing that)! Otherwise, freeze it.

This looks very good. Well done! (and well done on the soon-to-come broth!)

  10. Good for you! I love getting whole chickens - I find it is the most economical way to enjoy chicken. You get so much for your money, especially with having the carcass to boil for broth! I have never done one in the crock pot (until today - I actually have one in there as we speak), I usually roast them in the oven.

I realized yesterday that it has been over 2.5 weeks since I have posted a new recipe - it's about time for me to get back in my kitchen and start cooking some new things!

  11. Yay! I'm glad you finally did it! I always make my chickens in the crock pot. It's so easy. Then you can save the broth and have chicken and dumplings the next day!

  12. i do this all the time too...when the chicken will fit! although last time it didn't brown as nicely as yours did...but it is easy then i make broth with the carcass overnight in the crock too! i love waking up to the smell!

  13. A great chicken... I love making whole chickens... sadly, the price here is outrageous, so my whole chickens have to be the rotisserie ones they sell for almost half the price of the raw ones... someone explain that

  14. This looks sooo delishious!! I've made mine like that using my crockpot when I was working, and it seemed so good to come home and just have to make potatoes, gravy, veggie/and or salad, and supper would be ready! It does taste real good made this way in the crockpot too! Gosh, it's been a long time since I've made a whole chicken
this way. I think I might have to get me a whole chicken the next time I go to the grocery store!

    Blessings,
    ~Lynn

  15. Wow - this looks super tender and moist!
I've only roasted whole chicken, never put it in a crockpot. I'm definitely going to try this.

  16. Nice job! They are so awesome, right? And the broth you get will be even better. I promise. Be sure to add some vinegar to help break down the bones and get the good stuff out! I am so excited for you. Homemade broth is sometime I am passionate about. How silly is that? I need to find a cooler passion. = )

  17. I do this too! We get the smaller sized ones and perch them on potatoes wrapped in tin foil so it doesn't "boil" in the juices. The potatoes come out delicious too!

  18. Just made this last night and it turned out terrific! My first time making a "whole bird" and it couldn't have been easier. Chopped up the leftover meat (about 3 cups worth) for the freezer and today I'm making the broth. Thanks!!

  19. That looks great! I found a chicken recipe I love on menus4moms.com, it is called sticky chicken. Then use the leftovers for chicken and wild rice soup with mushrooms...awesome. :) You can find both recipes here if you are interested! http://www.menus4moms.com/kitchen/weeklymenu/2008/081208.php
