Cheesy Ham and Pasta Bake

A few weeks ago, I bought a ham.  It sounded like a good idea then... but since we still have 2/3 of the thing left, I'm now wondering if it was such a good idea.

We exhausted our go-to ham recipes!  I needed something new to make with ham.  That's when I came across Tiffannee's cheesy skillet and ham dish.  It was just the inspiration I needed :)

Cheesy Ham and Pasta Bake - Inspired by Tiffanee at One Crazy Cookie
{Print Recipe}

1 lb. whole wheat penne pasta
2 C extra sharp cheddar cheese
1 1/2 C diced ham
8oz. mushrooms, sliced
4 T white wheat flour
3 C milk* (divided)
1/4 tsp. pepper

Begin by boiling the pasta according to package directions.

Then, mix together 1 C milk and flour in a large measuring cup.

Meanwhile, saute the mushrooms in a large skillet with a little olive oil, if necessary.

When mushrooms are cooked, remove from the pan and toss with diced ham.

In the same skillet, pour the milk mixture into the pan.

Stir constantly, adding additional milk to reach desired thickness (I ended up adding ~1C milk to the mixture) while warming the mixture so that it thickens. Simmer about 3 minutes.

Add in the ham and mushroom mix, and simmer until ham warms.

Then, add in 3/4 of the shredded cheese.

Spread the pasta into a 9x13 glass baking dish.

Pour the cheesy sauce over the pasta.

Stir to coat. Then, sprinkle with remaining cheese.

Stick the dish into a warm oven... about 300 degrees, for 10 minutes, until the cheese on the top melts.

Serve warm with green veggies!

*You may need up to 3 C milk... I used 1 mixed with the flour, and then added a little over 1 C milk to make the sauce.  If it's still too thick to your liking, add additional milk, up to a total of 3 C.

  1. I actually attended the Cook's Ham blogger conference about a month ago and one thing that turned out to be sooooo good with extra ham- ham crescent rolls!

Put a piece of ham, slice of apple, provolone cheese and some dijon mustard in an unrolled crescent. Roll it up and bake it according to instructions, its soooo stinkin' good!! The apple holds its crunch and sweetness perfectly!

  2. This sounds so GREAT!!! I love pasta with lots of cheese.

  3. This looks wonderful, and I just bagged and froze a bunch of cut up ham, yay!!!

  4. Those hams!!! I usually have had to end up sharing people or freezing part of one. We like a wild rice soup that has ham in it that my friend used to make.

  5. Your's always looks better than mine!! Glad you liked it! Thanks for the sweet kind words.

  6. Can't wait to try it! One question, is it 3 cups or 1 cup of milk? Thanks!

  10. Help, I'm in the middle of making this right now and something doesn't jive with the milk. The ingredients call for 3 cups yet in the instructions you only say to use 1 cup. Can you let me know which is the correct amount?

  13. This looks soooo yummy! I usually make our "cheesy ham and pasta bake" with steamed broccoli, but I will definitely be adding mushrooms next time!

  14. Oh I'm def trying this soon!! (prob minus the mushrooms though). Thanks!

  15. Oh yeah, I NEEDED this recipe because when I recently asked my grocery-shopping man to buy "about a pound" of ham for a recipe, he brought home half a ham because it was a better buy! This is the guy who also recently brought home about 15 cans of white tuna (NOT kidding). This pasta looks delish!

Thanks for stopping by! I'd love to hear from you; especially how you're finding JOY in your kitchen.
