In fact, I've become kind of an applesauce snob. (At least I can admit it -- that's the first step, right?)
This is the only applesauce I will eat.
Yes, I use natural, unsweetened applesauce in baking, but to sit down and actually eat a bowl of applesauce, this is the only one that will do it for me.
The texture. Perfect.
The flavor. Amazing.
The fragrance. LOVE.
Try it. Trust me. You'll never go back to anything else either.
When my sister and I were little, we'd wait anxiously for a warm bowl of applesauce. I bet we looked like salivating puppies awaiting their dinner. But seriously, this was our favorite fall treat. Especially when we'd been apple picking :)
I've made this recipe so many times, it really doesn't have an "exact" recipe. This is the written recipe I got from my mom when I moved out on my own, but I usually decrease the sugar and up the amount of apples.
Spiced Country Applesauce - Mom
{Print Recipe}
2 lbs. apples, peeled, and cut
1 tsp. lemon juice
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 C sugar {depending on apples, you can omit the sugar all together}
Wash, peel and slice apples.
In a medium saucepan, bring 1/2 C water to a boil. Add the apples and bring the apples to a boil.
Reduce heat, and simmer, covered for 20-25 minutes stirring occasionally. Add water if needed.
Stir in lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar.
Serve warm or cold.
We love it topped with granola.
*Note: You can scale up this recipe easily. I just made a batch using 6 lbs. of Paula Red apples. Yum. I still used about 1 tsp. lemon juice, but upped the cinnamon and nutmeg. I also keep the sugar at about 1/2 C, if that. I usually add and taste to see whether or not I need more sugar. Depending on how sweet or tart your apples are, you can omit the sugar all together {we usually do!}

I am getting ready to start canning a bunch of apple recipes. I want to make apple butter, apple pie filling and applesauce this recipe is perfect. Have you ever made it in the crock pot?

Yum! I can't wait for some apples in our orchard to be ready. I am going to can a bunch of applesauce. This makes me hungry.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah! I love a good applesauce recipe too! I like mine mixed with yogurt. That was one of my all time favorite desserts as a teenager. I remember practically living off of it when I had my wisdom teeth out.

ReplyDeleteOh, This looks so good you have reminded me to make some again this fall. I like to use a mix of apples. In our area my favorite tart apple is Stamen Winesap and sweet is golden Delicious. I usually mix these two for a great sauce.

ReplyDeleteI've made applesauce before but it always turns brown. I noticed that your is also but mine usually is browner. I know the lemon juice is supposed to help, but I was wondering if you had any other pointers or if it's just supposed to be that way?

ReplyDeleteI've found that with most apples turned to sauce, no sugar is needed. I roughly chop my apples, put them in the crockpot with a little (like 1/4 cup) water to keep them from sticking, add a cinnamon stick, and put it on low for a few hours. Works great.

ReplyDeleteIt is awesome and you don't have to peel your apples, just wash and core and cook down until mushy and run through this mill. It is a great investment since I use mine for tomatoes and peach butter and Blackberry jam and all sorts of things!

ReplyDeleteI just made this for the first time last week, my in-laws have been giving us tons of apples from their tree and we haven't been able to keep up with eating them, so this was a great way to use the apples up. My 2 year old son loves this applesauce, and I feel good knowing that I have control over what goes into this applesauce and how much sugar he's getting. The store bought stuff has so much extra sugar.
