Today - I'd like to share with you a cheap, quick and easy solution to the plastic container problem.
We store our plastic containers on a pull-out drawer and place all the lids in a large plastic storage container.
By stacking the containers by size (which never seems to be a problem), we conserve space.
The plastic storage container works wonderfully to corral the crazy lids. Which seem to take over any space they enter into -- or is that just me?
That's what we've found that works to keep our tupperware in check -- what works for you?

ReplyDeleteWe put a chest of drawers in our utility room and it holds most of our tupperware. Having it in a drawer makes it so easy to get to.
ReplyDeleteWe do the same thing! I'm also pretty quick to throw one out if it gets stained or warped. That helps cut down on the clutter. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea! I bought the fancy Rubbermaid pieces with lids that stick to the bottom of the container, but it doesn't really work. And right now, the plastics cabinet is the only one without locks so my girls can get in there.

ReplyDeleteYour solution was our basic approach. It all went kaput when our girls became mobile! Now, we organize with disorganization. All the small tupperware are collected in a drawer, the large pieces are up on a shelf (so they are ready and waiting for leftovers!). Since tupperware is a good toy (for so many things!), disorganization is a small price to pay for creativity and fun.
ReplyDeleteWe keep the lunch containers in a drawer, making it easy for the kids to get at (also where the plastic cups and bowls live for the same reason). The food storage ones are in the cupboard next to the sink, making it naturally easy when you are cleaning up from dinner. Blue lids for the fridge, and purple or red lids for the freezer.

ReplyDeleteWe purchased to plastic add on shelves for the door to store our lids in. They just nail to the door frame, don't extend too far into the door, and we keep one for small lids and one for the larger lids. Saves our limited shelf space for our glass storage dishes and the couple of plastic sets we still have. Storage is at a premium for us, so I have to make all the surfaces work for us!
ReplyDeleteI put my lids in a gallon sized ziplock baggie. I have one for the large lids and one for the small. You can still put the baggies into a plastic shoebox. The container bottoms are stacked by size in a drawer or on a shelf, depending on how large they are. Helps too, if you put a small dot in permanent ink to identify any lids that go to a particular container.
ReplyDeleteI do it another way, and it wastes space, but it works great. I keep every piece WITH it's cover and stack them. Then I never have to look for the matching piece!
ReplyDeleteWe use the same system and it has worked for years, until I delegated the task of unloading the dishwasher to my 11 ds. His idea of putting the tupperware/plasticware away is to throw it in the cabinet. Note to self - must work on ds's organizational skills :-)
ReplyDeleteWe received a set of Rubbermaid stackable containers for our wedding, and they have been the BEST space saver! I think Wal-Mart and Target sell them really cheap...they come in a pack of like 10 or 12, but the best thing is, the lids snap together! Best. Invention. Ever. It saves my sanity and my cabinet space! :)
ReplyDeleteI use an old baby wipes tub with the lid taken off to store my tupperware lids in. It is the perfect depth for the cabinet where I have my containers.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lovely cabinet of a toddler free home. Mine used to be tidy like that too. I've given up for now. In a couple years it will look that again.
ReplyDeletei use the same system, lids in a bigger tupperware and tupperware stacked by shape and size. I don't have the pull out drawers so I put mine on a lazy susan in the cabinet. Just like Jenny, my system worked great until my 11&10 yr olds unload the dishwasher.
