Soft Italian Bread Sticks

When I saw this recipe, I immediately thought "Olive Garden"! Then, I took a closer look at the ingredients and noticed they use Italian seasoning -- delicious. We had to try them.

Soft Italian Bread Sticks - Modified from Marie

1/3 C warm water (70-80 degrees F)
1 T soft butter (or olive oil)
1 C bread flour
2/3 T sugar (I just guestimated this)
1/3 tsp. Italian seasoning
1 tsp. salt
1/3 tsp. garlic powder
3/4 tsp. yeast
butter, melted
Parmesan cheese, grated

Gather your ingredients...

Place all ingredients in (minus the butter and Parmesan) in your bread machine following the directions. Press start and wait until ready.

or... combine water, sugar and yeast together, and allow to get bubbly. Then add in the spices and the bread flour (and salt), adding the garlic last.

Knead bread together (using your fun, new pastry mat!)

and shape into a ball. Cover (or place in a plastic bag) and allow to rise until doubled.

Cut into a 4-6 inch rope and roll to form bread sticks.

Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 20 minutes, until doubled. Place bread sticks about 2 inches apart on a baking sheet (you may need to grease it).

Bake at 350 for 15 minutes until golden brown (... do not over bake!)

Brush immediately with melted butter and top with Parmesan cheese.

Enjoy!

  2. Those look really good! Our family loves breadsticks with any pasta dish or just to eat with sauce to dip them in.

  3. Love that pastry mat - where did you get it? My grandma used to have one and I loved it and now I cannot seem to find one anywhere. By the way, I am completely copying you and using almost all of your recipes this week :D

  4. I tried these tonight along with the penne chicken and spinach (with your recipe for spaghetti sauce, as well). We loved the pasta. The bread was good, but lacked salt. Did you mean to omit the salt? The original recipe called for salt (I checked after I cooked ours). We have also tried the whole wheat sandwich bread and have some of your others on our meal plan! Thx so much for the great recipes...I'm finding joy in my kitchen, too!

  6. Sorry you may get this a lot. Where do you find the time to do all of this stuff yourself and really I guess the question is the energy. I am really trying to train myself to do this at home, especially before my child gets older. I work, but I would really like the to be the kind of mom that make lots if not most of our eats at home. I really need some good advice and time management I guess. A little help and advice please?

    1. Well - we don't have kids yet, so that helps! But, I've found it is the little things that make a big difference. For example, after grocery shopping, if I take time to dice the veggies or wash and slice fruit, then it's ready for the week. I use my crockpot a lot, and the bread machine too. Most of our recipes come together in 30-40 minutes, and I've found that's really doable for our time schedule. I try to make some bigger batches of recipes and freeze half for later in some instances too. I don't know if that helps with some ideas - but those are some of our "tricks". Let me know if you have more questions!
