DIY: Wheat Thins
On my cracker-making craze of late, I decided to give homemade wheat thins a try!
Surprisingly, they tasted just like the ones I remembered eating years ago. Quite delicious and a big hit at our house.
Wheat Thins - Adapted from Katie at Kitchen Stewardship
1 1/4 C whole wheat flour
1 T honey
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. paprika
2-3 T butter, melted
1/4 C water
<1/4 tsp. vanilla
Combine the dry ingredients together, and then add in the honey, vanilla, water and butter.
Stir to combine.
Roll out to 1/8th inch thickness on a cookie sheet.
Cut with a pizza cutter into crackers.
Bake at 400 for 5-10 minutes until lightly browned.
{Note, the above crackers were made from white whole wheat flour, the ones below were made from red whole wheat flour}
I cannot get over how easy it is to make crackers. Why did I wait this long?!

That's amazing!! We made flour tortillas the other day - SO easy and so good!! And you know exactly what the ingredients are. If I post the recipe I'll send you the link if you want to try.

ReplyDelete@ Cate -- ours don't last more than a few days... but I would guess they'd keep for a week or more. You can always throw them in the freezer for longer storage.
ReplyDeletetoo much fun... My weakness is not chocolate, but snack crackers... i avoid buying them, but now they are in my pantry....AAARRRGGGHHH

I will have to try again, the one time I tried I didn't get them thin enough and they didn't turn out. You make it look so simple. Thanks for the recipe..

oo, more yummy cracker recipes! I was wondering if you knew of a cracker recipe that would come out similar to Ritz crackers. My husband loves ritz crackers, but I would really like to find a recipe that was more healthful. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI made these last night and they tasted great! However, next time I need to make sure I make them thinner (I guessed on the width and made them too thick!) and bake them a couple minutes longer (closer to 10 mins. than 5 mins. in my oven). Can't wait to make them again. My 2-year-old really likes them!
ReplyDeleteYes, the key is to thinly roll the crackers. I've heard if you have a pasta maker, that it works great to get your dough thin.
ReplyDeleteI just hand-roll the dough, dividing it into sections to make it easier. My crackers on the edges are always thinner than the middle ... so I aim to get that middle thin!
