Caprese Dinner Rolls

After yesterday’s sugar high, we’re sharing a recipe today that does not fit into the dessert category.  It’s about balance – right?

The dessert recipe I shared yesterday was even healthier than the original and I shared two recipes this week that had a high percentage of veggies.  So… we’ll wrap up this week with a delicious bread recipe.

These dinner rolls are full of flavor, and I don’t know about you, but it’s always fun to find a surprise inside!

Caprese Dinner Rolls – Inspired by Gimme Some Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 recipe Italian Herb dough
  • 18 cubes of Mozzarella
  • 18 mini cherry tomatoes, or 18 slices of tomato
  • 18 small pieces of basil
  • Olive oil
  • Dried Basil
  • Sea Salt

Directions

Prepare the dough according to directions.  Stop before shaping the dough and continue with the instructions here.

When the dough is ready, divide into 18 pieces.

Stretch each piece out into a flat circle.

In the center of each circle, place 1 cube mozzarella, 1 small tomato or slice of tomato, and 1 small piece of fresh basil.

Wet your fingers in a small dish of cold water and run the wet fingers around the edge of the dough.  Bring the dough together in the center and pinch to seal.  Repeat for all the dough pieces.

Place the dough pieces into a lightly greased 9x13 glass baking dish or 2 pie tins.  Spray the tops with olive oil and season with dried basil and sea salt.  Cover and allow the rolls to sit for 30 minutes.

Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes until the rolls are cooked through.

Serve warm & enjoy!

  1. YUM! What a great idea to add the tomato and cheese inside. These look delicious...and I'm quite certain I could make a meal just out of the rolls!

  2. That's a really cute idea! I can see endless possibilities for stuffing as well. Maybe I'll give these a go on the menu next week and make a "stuffing bar" for my kids to fill their own. :)
