Granola

Granola is my favorite breakfast cereal. I used to be addicted to Life. I still like Life, but granola has topped the breakfast chart for me. Why?

Granola is healthy (oats are awesome for you), it's cheap (I scored oatmeal for 4 cents an ounce), cinnamon is a great spice, it's versitile (over ice cream, applesauce, yogurt, or with milk or dried fruits).

And, with a nut-allergy, I can't buy pre-made granola, so I'm thrilled that I too can enjoy granola :)

Here's my favorite granola recipe. If you use oil rather than butter, you can use less and it gets crunchier :)

Brown Sugar Granola - Finding Joy in My Kitchen
{Print Recipe}

1-2 T butter or olive oil
3/4 - 1 C brown sugar, packed
1/4 C water
1/4 - 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
7-8 C oats {quick or Old Fashioned}
Dried fruit, etc.

Melt butter, brown sugar and water together in a pan over medium heat. Stir well, and allow mixture to simmer for 2-3 minutes.

In a bowl, mix together cinnamon and oats and add to the brown sugar mix.

Remove from the heat and stir until all oats are well coated. Place granola on a cookie sheet (with edges), and bake for 5 minutes at 375.

Remove from the oven, and stir/flip granola and bake for another 5 minutes until granola is lightly browned. Allow granola to cool on the cookie sheet.

Transfer to an airtight container when cool. Granola will keep for a couple of weeks in an airtight container... but ours never lasts that long!

  1. Seems simple and cheap enough. I'll have to try it when I go into granola-making mode (next week probably). We burn through cereal like nobody's business, so cheaper is better in our house. :)

  2. How long does this last in an air tight container? I would probably be the only one eating it so I'm not sure how fast I'd get through it. Maybe I'll try a half batch.

  3. We just eat raw old fashioned oats topped with fruit...this would be a real treat!

  4. We don't do nuts in our granola either as dd isn't a nutty person. LOL! Thanks for the recipe!

  5. This looks like a great granola recipe. I bought all the ingredients two weeks ago to make some and haven't yet. UGH! This reminded me that it's all sitting waiting for me. :)Thanks for sharing with Tasty Tuesday.

  7. Do you add the fruit before or after you bake it?

  8. @ Marjo -- I always make the batch without any fruit; that way we can add it fresh or dried to the bowls that we eat! Keeps best that way too.

  9. Hi SnoWhite,

    Seems like you have all of the recipes I love, need, and might not otherwise find easily. I was just wishing for bagels last week, and there they were. Today I was thinking of searching for some sort of granola recipe, but didn't have to look anywhere but in my Bloglines reader--you're making it, too!

    Thanks for taking the time to post these great recipes and the photos. I really appreciate it.

    And I can totally empathize with your eating what's in the cupboards before moving... we're headed back to the US after 2 other countries in about 2 years and we're in "what can we make from what we have?" mode again! ;)

    Love your new kitchen! Great choice I'm sure on Mushroom Bisque will be lovely... our living/dining rooms are Mushroom Cap. :)

  10. Yummy! I love this recipe and will definitely be giving it a try. I made my own granola recipe recently but think you have some ideas in yours that I'll be trying. I love adding raisins for sweetness and sunflower seeds for additional protein. I have to ration out portions in small baggies so I don't eat the whole batch!

  11. I can't eat certain types of nuts either, so this granola would be good for me as well.

  12. Popping over from Eat at Home Ingredient Spotlight. I am going to make this today. I have lots of old-fashioned oats to use up. Must have grabbed them when I meant to get quick-cooking at the store. I love that this recipe is so basic, and I can add whatever nuts or dried fruit I am in the mood for when I eat it.

  14. So, what would you estimate as calories in a serving? I love granola, and am going to make my own. But, I also know it can heavy on the calories....any thoughts?
