Kitchen Tip: Cleaning your Misto

Do you have an olive oil sprayer like a Misto at your house?  I’ve had ours for about a year now, and up until July, it had been working quite well.

Then, it started spraying a stream of olive oil.  Which, to me was still better than an aerosol-filled spray.

But, it wasn’t the spray my Misto had delivered before.

Thus, we embarked on a clean –a detox if you will, for your Misto.

And, I’m happy to report, our Misto has a nice fine mist of olive oil now!

You will need:
1/3 C vinegar
3/4 C hot water + more hot water (divided)
1 squirt of dish soap

To clean, follow these simple steps:

  1. Dump out any remaining oil in your Misto.
  2. Pour in 1/3 C vinegar.
  3. Spray away until you’ve passed all 1/3 C of that vinegar through the Misto.  This helps break up the oil.
  4. Place one squirt of dish soap into 3/4 C hot water.  No need to mix, just squirt it in.
  5. Pour the soap/water mix into the Misto & spray away.
  6. Rinse with hot water.
  7. Pour in more hot water and continue spraying until the stream is clear and there is no more soap.
  8. Rinse.
  9. Set the pieces out to dry.

When dry, refill and use as directed.

Do you have a Misto or other oil spraying product?  How do you like it?

  1. Mine just started spraying a steady stream - I definitely need to clean it. You are a lifesaver!

  2. Mine definitely needs to be cleaned - thanks for posting how you did that! I've had it for a few years and do like it...but I kind of forget about it. I should give it a thorough cleaning and start using it more.

  3. Don't have one...yet, but would love to get one so thanks for the tip!

Nominated you for the One Very Lovely Blog and Inspiring Blogger Award. Stop by and check it out.

  4. Thank you so much -- my Misto got left in a box out in our shed, and it STINKS from the rancid olive oil that was in it. Hopefully, this will fix the problem. I do like the Misto, especially since now I'm trying to avoid "frankenfoods".

  5. Funny, mine started acting up in July also. I fake cleaned it and it helped but it's definitely not the same anymore. I'll have to try your method. Here's hoping because I miss how it used to work!

  6. Mine has not worked well since I bought it. I am going to use your tip to see if it helps.

    1. I had mixed results with my Misto also, until I read, lol ~somewhere~ how to get better consistent results. Do a through cleaning as described in this blog, and refill with oil. After each use, priming/pumping, before you put it away, just turn the top just enough to release the pressure. You'll hear it the air pressure release. Put the pump/cap on and next time you go to use it, just hand tighten the valve cap (the piece you remove to refill). Once I started doing that it worked really well, and reduced heavy duty cleaning to once a year. Release the pressure when you're thu, and retighten before you pump. See if that helps!

  7. Thanks so much for sharing! I recently tried cleaning mine like I clean everything else and didn't have much success. This will be helpful!

    1. We did too - we tried water & soap, etc., before, but this time it really worked!

  8. This tip helped me too - at the end of each use, turn it upside down (I aim into the garbage can) and spray to discharge any pressure.

  9. Thank you for sharing! I plan to try this out on my Misto asap

  10. Thank you for the tip! I followed your instructions exactly and saved my Misto sprayer!

  11. Thank you. My Misto is now working like new.

  12. Ours has not worked since we purchased it, we cannot even get the vinegar to spray out

  13. Thanks a million

  14. Bless you all over the place. I was afraid I had ruined mine, but I followed your steps and, voila! It works beautifully! I never would have thought to use the vinegar to break down the oil.

Thanks for stopping by! I'd love to hear from you; especially how you're finding JOY in your kitchen.
