Grown Up Birthday Cake

Do you have a traditional birthday cake recipe?  We have a traditional birthday cake -- served every year for each one of our birthdays.

But, as we've aged, we've lost our "love" of frosting... and our taste buds have grown, more, shall we say -- sophisticated.

This year, for my sister's 23rd birthday {which just happens to be today}, I made her a grown up version of our traditional birthday cake!

White cake...
Lemon curd filling...
Vanilla whipped cream "frosting"... and,
Fresh raspberries!

It was a hit!  And... I believe, this will be our new traditional birthday cake!!

Grown Up Birthday Cake - Finding Joy in My Kitchen

Yellow Cake Mix Recipe -- use 3 egg whites only, save the egg yolks for the lemon curd!
Vanilla Whipped Cream Frosting -- use 1/2 C powdered sugar, 1 tsp, vanilla and 3/4 C whipping cream and whip together.

Happy Birthday, Little One!  Even though you have grown up... it's good to know you're never too old to be serious in a photo ;-)

  1. That looks fantastic! But you linked to your yellow cake recipe instead of the white one. :)

  4. @ C. Beth -- I fixed the recipe -- I used the yellow cake mix, just made it without egg yolks to ge the white color and then saved the yolks for the curd -- works out wonderfully!

  7. Lemon curd filling. That is so awesome! My partner has a birthday coming up. He doesn't like cake. But that is ok because that means I get to eat all of it.

  9. Thanks for the fantastic looking recipe. I loved the family photos, too. My daughter is only a year old but already photos from her birth make me sappy and nostalgic, and I even get that feeling looking at other people's photos with their new babies.
